Being pregnant, there are some changes, both physiological and hormonal, including the increase in fluid requirement. The increase occurred to support fetus growth (at the end of trimester 1, about 94% of fetus body is fluid), formation and renewal of amniotic fluid, an increase of blood volume (with an average increase of 45% compared to normal condition).

In particular, dehydration during pregnancy will occur more, possibly due to(*):

- Morning sickness occurs in almost 50% of pregnancies and usually lasts until the 14th week of pregnancy. Excessive nausea and vomiting make it difficult to drink and also decrease ION and fluid loss.

- Nausea and vomiting with frequency and symptoms are more severe than morning sickness, can last until the baby is born and not only occur in the morning. In some cases, it needs extra care in the hospital.

Dehydration during pregnancy not only has a negative impact on the pregnant mom but also can affect the fetus in the womb. Some dehydration effects on pregnant moms are(**):

- In pregnant moms, the body's ability to release heat is reduced, and dehydration will get worse. If the temperature increases until > 39o C, the fetus will feel it too. And if this overheating condition occurred in trimester 1, the fetus has a risk of getting a neural tube defect (congenital abnormalities in the brain or spinal cord).

- Amniotic fluid functions as a protector and supports fetal growth. If low amniotic fluid volume occurs in the early stage of pregnancy, it may cause birth defects or even miscarriage. Meanwhile, if it occurs in the final stage of pregnancy, it can lead to premature birth.

So that pregnant women should maintain body fluids during pregnancy in the range of 2300 ml – 2600 (***) ml per day to(****)

  • Support fetus growth
  • Formation of amniotic fluid
  • Absorption of water-soluble vitamins
  • Increasing blood volume
  • Increasing body fluid loss
